Anonymous asked: What do you think of Muslim women being put in the backs of masajid and usually not being involved in what happens within the community? Where I live it's like that. Is that what women are good for? Being hidden? Why are we put behind a curtain or gate?
Hiding women away and not allowing them to be involved in discussions that have to do with them or their children is not only wrong, it’s also detrimental to the Muslim community. The women of the community are our mothers, our first teachers. They are the ones at home with the children and raising the next generation, if they don’t deserve to have a say then I don’t know who does. There were no partitions during the Prophet’s time. If we are supposed to follow in his footsteps then why have we added something to separate the women and men in such a way that he didn’t practice? I know people will say it’s to keep distractions at a low and all that but instead of forcing women behind a curtain or gate, maybe they should work on speaking to the Ummah as a whole and nip the problem in the bud.
The problem is that instead of taking responsibility people would rather not face a problem or issue at all. It’s easier to put women away than to enforce the lowering of gazes. In my opinion there should be a curtain made available to women that would rather not be in plain sight and an open area for women that don’t mind. The men sit in front of the women, if a man is turning around to stare at the women behind him or can’t seem to concentrate because there are women around him then the imam should call him out on it and if there are women that purposefully position themselves in a man’s point of view or don’t draw their veils appropriately in the masjid when a man is passing then she should also be called out on it. There’s no need for a blame game or to sweep the problem under the rug… if everyone goes to the masjid with the intention to pray and learn instead of find a spouse then there will be no problem and if the ones that are there for something other than that are put in their places (privately) then I don’t see why partitions would even come into play.
